More about Guy

Did you ever have one of those dogs that just impressed the heck out of you that you had to pinch yourself because not only were you the breeder, but the owner of such a great dog? Well, that's how I feel about Guy. At 7 mos. I started Guy on sheep in my small 100 x 40' pen. He had a nice fetch; was well balanced and a quiet worker. So I figured what the heck I'd take him out into the 3 acre pasture that I have the lambs in to see how he handled that. WOW!! I immediately had to take photos and share them! I was so impressed. Guy naturally wants to work out wide off of sheep as you can see by these photos.  He also naturally will fall in behind and rate them, easing off pressure or putting it on when needed. I've been so enamored with his working style - one in which I can actually THINK before I act, that it's actually fun to get out and train him! I work Guy at least once a week on stock and basic training daily off stock. He easily takes a stop and down and we are now working on directions. Below is some current working pictures. He is 16 mos in these photos.

I've been giving Guy a lot of farm chores lately (like I did with his mom, Trouble) to assess his 'thinking' ability and to see how he reacts under stress. At one time I had him walk up to the flock from a good 100' and bring them to me to a gate which was another good 100' feet away. No rushing, he perfectly assessed the situation, balancing off and behind to add a little pressure to bring the flock AT A WALK to me. Stopped at the gate and allowed them to walk nicely through. The other day, I had him take the older ewes and ram out of the training pen and put them away. This was going to be a little more stress work for him as they like to bolt out of the pen and spread out everywhere. He handled it with out losing his cool, bringing them to me as I stood at the gate, calmly stopping and letting them settle before I opened the gate, and never once thought to rush in.

Not only is he just pleasant as punch to work on stock, he has an easygoing attitude, confidence, and the looks and structure to make it in the conformation ring. At 9 mos he went to his first conformation show and what an EASY dog to show! Guy freestacks naturally and gaits smoothly by your side. He is quiet, reserved and easy going. And very much a gentleman.

Update: July 2006 Trials.

These are Guy's first time out at a trial and the third time out off the property. I was VERY impressed with my little doggie. He handled the sheep with quiet, calm control. He is a wide working boy and very honest. He qualified at both trials with a 73 (4th place) and 82 (3rd place).

Winter 2007

Guy is starting to work calves. He will go for the head first and grips pretty much like his mom. But has no problem going to heel either. He is tough and pretty much likes working the tough stock too. Doesn't mind working in tight spaces either. He is VERY biddable - which is really fun to have in a dog!  I hope to get him out to trials this year (2008).
